As I was reading the BBC news, I come across news that almost stunned me. It declared that it was the EGG that came before the chicken. Finally, the question that has kept scientists, philosophers, students and everyday people puzzled for hundreds of years has been solved. A Nottingham University, genetic expert by the name John Brookfield argues that chicken started out as an embryo in an egg. His reasoning is that DNA change during an animal’s life is not possible. Thus, the DNA change occurred in the egg and the egg produced a chicken. Convincing? I think so! This argument implies that the DNA in the chicken was the same as that in the egg which changed while an egg indicating that the egg was NOT a chicken egg. This is in line with the theory of evolution of which I am a firm believer. I am hence convinced that it was indeed the egg that came out the winner.
Another explanation offered by Wikipedia (there are many interesting theories here) states that the egg was laid by an animal that was an intermediate between amphibians and reptiles which later altered its DNA composition. How Stuff Works, a scientific portal, on the other hand offers a different explanation, still in favor of the egg. According to their website two non-chickens mated and the DNA in their new zygote (egg) contained the mutation that produced the first true chicken.
Biologically, it has thus been proven that egg came before the chicken. However, if you are a believer in God’s creation, I do not have an objection. Hail the Lord!

Dear Rupak,
Since you again started this most repetitious argument, I couldn’t stop myself getting indulge on the discussion. Well in my opinion, any reasoning on this topic can make sense only if it is known what the exact conundrum was between that farmer and the philosopher?
As on my part,
Chickens obviously came first, as eggs are laid by chickens. Further, even if chickens evolved from some non-chicken creature, the first chicken did not come from the egg of a chicken—it had to come from a non-chicken egg. Therefore, the first chicken egg came after the first chicken.
And I guess the discussion is not on the topic “which came first, the chicken or a dinosaur egg (which look more like a today’s chicken)?”, If it is I would obviously say the Dinosaur egg came before the chicken.
But If it’s saying “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” then we are talking about chicken’s egg here. Isn’t it?
Well that’s my perception on the question itself rather than the answer.
Anyway who cares! at least not the chickens…If chickens were interested in tracing their family trees, they would need to bone up on some DNA research done in Japan. So lets have a look on chicken facts rather……….hahahah….chill
There are more chickens than people in the world and there are 450 million chicken in the US of A and well over 3,000,000,000 in China.

When we talk about chicken egg, we could be talking about either an egg that produces chicken or an egg that came from a chicken. Those are two different things. When we talk of eating chicken egg from the grocery store, we talk of the eggs that came from the chicken, as those eggs do not produce chicken. Thus, the common understanding of a chicken egg is an egg that is produced by a chicken. After this is clear let me go on to the debate over what came first.
When you stated “even if chickens evolved from some non-chicken creature, the first chicken did not come from the egg of a chicken…” I think you misunderstood my argument. Chickens did not evolve from non-chicken creatures but chicken eggs did due to DNA alterations. First chicken, however, did come out of egg. Thus, goes my explanation.
Anonymous,
Whoever you are, I appreciate your taking time to read my postings. But, please come forward if you are bold enough and dare to confront my ideas. You are not helping yourself by posting senseless and anti-gay or racial remarks, coz I stand for those causes as well.
Challenge my ideas and thoughts in a civilized manner if you have the guts.
